Large Venue Indoor Sound System

Published in Nov-Dec 2019

When setting up a sound system in a large venue that aims to reach an audience of few thousands, it become crucial to consider technical factors like coverage requirements. Fortunately, sound techs today have an extensive range of sound reinforcement equipment at their disposal. Choosing the right sound system for a particular venue can at times get daunting. In this product focus, AV-ICNx highlights ten state-of-the-art options for Large Indoor Venues. This is list is intended to be a guide and does not endorse any product.

BOSE - F1 MODEL 812

Bose F1 Model 812 is a 1000-watt, full-range loudspeaker featuring Bose Flexible Array technology. At the heart of the F1 is a 30-cm woofer nested behind an array of 8 high-output drivers. These 9 speakers are supported by a lower crossover point than conventional loudspeakers to give full voice to your sound and deliver clearer, more natural vocals and midrange clarity, even at high volumes. And you control the vertical coverage pattern. So, wherever you’re playing, you can adapt the PA to match the room. Bose F1 Model 812 comes with 132 dB max SPL and low-frequency performance down to 43 Hz (-10 dB). Optional Bose F1 Subwoofer (sold separately) for even more low-frequency response with integrated speaker stand for F1 Model 812, built-in 1000-watt amplifier, hidden cable channels for clean appearance and built-in handles for easy transport.

JBL- INTELLIVOX DSX430

The Intellivox-DSX430 is the second tallest of Duran Audio’s fully integrated digitally controlled loudspeaker arrays. A single Intellivox-DSX430  is capable of covering an area of up to 50 m while maintaining an even sound pressure level. Its array length not only offers long throw capability but also extended control at lower frequencies, making it ideally suited to highly reverberant environments. The thirteen, custom designed, 4” loudspeakers  and eight 1” dome tweeters are driven by a sixteen channel class-D amplifier, powered by a sophisticated switched mode power supply, all of which combine to ensure years of reliable operation.

The dome tweeters in the DSX units not only improve the horizontal coverage at high frequencies but also enhance the subjective sound quality of the system for both speech and music.

An extensive set of surveillance functions have also been implemented to meet the stringent demands of typical Voice Alarm (life safety) applications.

The unit can be controlled using our proprietary WinControl software which offers user friendly control of the beam steering parameters, audio processing, pre-sets  and surveillance features. The increased lower frequency control offered by the array makes the Intellivox-DSX430 suitable for easy and unobtrusive implementation in highly reverberant and architecturally sensitive environments. The low frequency response of the system can be easily extended using a JBL sub woofer system.

D&B AUDIO - VI12 LOUDSPEAKER

The Vi12 is a 3-way passive design housing 2 x 10” LF drivers, one hornloaded 8”MF driver and two 1.4” exit HF compression drivers with 2.5”voicecoils mounted to a dedicated waveshaping device. The symmetrical dipolar arrangement of the neodymium LF drivers around the centrally mounted coaxial MF and HF components allows a smooth overlap of the adjacent frequency bands in the crossover design. This results in an exceptional 120° horizontal constant directivity dispersion control nominally being maintained down to 250 Hz. The mechanical and acoustical design enables flown vertical arrays of up to twenty four loudspeakers. It can be used in columns of purely Vi12 loudspeakers or combined with Vi8s and / or with Vi-SUBs. The cabinet is constructed from marine plywood and has an impact and weather protected PCP (Polyurea Cabinet Protection) finish. The front of the loudspeaker cabinet is protected by a rigid metal grill backed by an acoustically transparent foam. The loudspeaker cabinet is also available in Special Color (SC) and Weather Resistant (WR) options. The Weather Resistant option provides an IP55 rating, and enables operation of loudspeakers in changing ambient conditions.

MUGELLO-KS5

The Mugello-KS5 is an incredibly versatile, 21” self-powered subwoofer featuring neodymium magnets with 6” voice coils driven by a powerful Class D amplifier. The large ports are designed to be fully symmetrical to the speakers which means the back loading of the drivers is consistent and even with no port air turbulence. The triangle port construction also provided excellent structural integrity and strength, effectively eliminating any box resonance.

The rear panel provides inputs for both balanced line signals and digital signals in AES/EBU protocol, also on an XLR for ease of cabling.

All DSP functions including EQ can be controlled with remote managing software via USB or RS485, again conveniently on a standard XLR. There are different DSP presets, specifically made by K-array to optimize the system performance of the variety of device configuration available. Additionally, you can also create, save, and store your own personal presets on the Mugello-KS5.

Martin Audio- CDD-LIVE 12

The CDD-LIVE 12 is a high-performance, self-powered system designed for professional applications that require high output levels and exceptional fidelity from a very compact enclosure. With a peak output capability of 128dB at 1 metre, it is the ideal solution for a multitude of premium stand-alone and distributed sound reinforcement requirements — from touring, theatre and portable live sound, to concert hall and HoW installations, AV events and stage monitor use.

Featuring a high-specification 12” (300mm) LF/1” (25mm) exit HF Coaxial Differential Dispersion driver, it delivers more consistent audience coverage than a conventional system with a fixed X° x Y° coverage pattern and has wide 110° horizontal coverage close-up. The innovative CDD technology also achieves ‘point source’ summation of the LF and HF sections — eliminating off-axis variations in frequency response associated with non-coaxial designs.

A self-powered system, the CDD-LIVE 12 incorporates a two-channel Class D amplifier, DSP and Dante digital audio networking — simplifying set-up, enhancing control and eliminating amplifier racks. The onboard amplifier delivers 2000W LF + 500W HF peak output to the drivers, and its switched-mode power supply auto-ranges to global mains voltages from 100 to 240V 50/60Hz.

DSP functions — including parametric EQ, delay, muting, gain and preset selection — can be controlled over Ethernet from a PC or Windows tablet via intuitive VU-NET proprietary software.

Meyer Sound- LYON

The LYON system’s flexibility, scalability, and ultra-low distortion make it an indispensable tool for any project from concert hall to arenas, from EDM festivals to outdoor symphony performances.

Self-powered technology eliminates amplifier racks, long loudspeaker cables, and any calibration of gain and crossover settings. The system can be rigged and ready in minutes.

As a two-way element, the LYON has fewer crossovers and interactions between different drivers to facilitate greater phase coherence and seamless, uniform coverage.

Low- and high-frequency drivers, patented REM manifold, and constant-directivity horn are engineered for exceptionally accurate coverage control—even at continuously high output levels.

The LYON-M can anchor long-throw arrays for tours, festivals, and arena systems. It also provides a fill option for a LEO-M array. The LYON-W widens horizontal coverage and the LYON-WXT option extends vertical coverage for special downfill applications.
