Barco Tackles Traffic Congestion for Better Urban Flow with Cutting-Edge Video Wall Display

The latest LED displays by Barco are integrated for quicker and more precise responses, informed decisions, improved collaboration and coordination, and enhanced monitoring

Known as India's Silicon Valley, Bengaluru is a vibrant metropolis with a rapidly growing population and an ever-increasing number of vehicles. With the best-in-class visualisation solutions from Barco and the latest traffic management technology, Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) was able to redefine traffic monitoring and control in the city.

Context

Bengaluru's rapid urbanisation has led to a significant increase in vehicular traffic, now exceeding 13 million vehicles with an annual growth rate of 7-10%. This surge has made Bengaluru one of India's most populous cities, increasing the demand for efficient transportation and quick incident response.

To address these challenges, the Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) initiated the B-TRAC modernization plan, which included setting up a Traffic Management Center (TMC) to enhance traffic oversight and management.

Challenge

Bengaluru faces severe traffic congestion, with daily congestion stretching over 1,638 km. The previous traffic monitoring infrastructure was inadequate, with outdated rear-projection cubes (RPCs) failing to deliver clear visuals, leading to delayed responses and compromised traffic management. This inefficiency hindered operators' ability to monitor real-time conditions effectively, resulting in increased congestion, longer travel times, and safety risks. A reliable, advanced traffic monitoring solution was needed to meet current and future challenges.

Solution

To address Bengaluru's traffic crisis, Barco installed a cutting-edge RGB Laser ODL-721 rear-projection video wall at the TMC. This system, featuring 64 vibrant 70-inch display cubes, provides operators with clear visuals to manage roadways effectively. The video wall's dual-redundant architecture ensures uninterrupted performance, allowing operators to stay ahead of incidents. Its exceptional brightness enables real-time visibility of traffic conditions, empowering operators to make swift, informed decisions. The video wall also fosters collaboration among teams at 50 workstations, enhancing communication and traffic management.

Results

The installation of Barco's RGB Laser ODL-721 has transformed traffic management at the TMC, improving operational efficiency and safety. The upgraded technology allows over 100 operators to manage data from approximately 13 million vehicles daily, ensuring enhanced safety and seamless traffic flow. The system enables quicker and precise responses to incidents, providing clarity and situational awareness. This has led to significant improvements during critical periods such as VIP movements, holidays, and busy days. The system facilitates real-time data sharing and streamlines communication, ensuring faster decision-making and efficient teamwork.

As Mr. MN Anucheth, IPS, Joint Commissioner of Police, highlights, "Whether it's a minor delay or a major accident, our team can act decisively and quickly, ensuring smooth traffic operations even during peak times."

With Barco's RGB Laser ODL-721, the TMC has set a new standard in traffic management excellence, enhancing safety, responsiveness, and overall efficiency.
